Is Microblading Still Worth It?

Why Nano Brows Are The Better Brow Option In 2025 | Bloom Beauty Studio, Toronto

“Do you do Microblading?”

“I’m thinking of getting Microblading. Can you help with that?”

“I want something natural, like Microblading... is that what you do?”

These are questions I hear all the time, and they make total sense. Microblading is the most widely known form of permanent makeup, so it’s usually the first thing people think of when they’re exploring brow options.

I don’t offer microblading, and there’s a reason for that.

I’ll be honest: Microblading changed the game when it first came out.

It gave people with sparse, uneven brows the chance to wake up with definition, symmetry, and confidence.

But over time, the downsides became harder to ignore. Things like trauma to the skin, pigment blurring, and results that didn’t age well. Many clients began to notice patchiness, discoloration, or even scar tissue after undergoing repeated touch-ups. It became clear that while the idea was great, the method wasn’t always the gentlest or most reliable in the long term.

The good news is, like most beauty innovations, techniques evolve, and today, there’s a softer, more skin-friendly option that’s quickly becoming the new gold standard: Nano Brows.

If you’re here Googling Microblading in Toronto, this post is for you. Let’s walk through how microblading works, why it’s falling out of favour, and what makes Nano Brows the better choice for most people today.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a type of cosmetic tattooing where a tiny blade is used to create hair-like cuts in the skin, which are then filled with pigment. The result? Fuller, more defined brows that last around 1–2 years.

It became extremely popular because it mimics real brow hairs; however, the process involves cutting into the skin, which can cause trauma, especially for sensitive or mature skin types.

What Are the Downsides of Microblading?

Microblading isn’t necessarily “bad,” but it comes with some real limitations:

  • Skin Trauma: The blades cut into the skin, which can cause more inflammation and longer healing.

  • Scarring Risks: Especially after multiple sessions or touch-ups over the years.

  • Thicker Strokes: Less precise than nano, which can look harsh as it heals.

  • Not Ideal for All Skin: People with oily, thin, or mature skin often get unpredictable results.

I receive messages all the time from people who have had Microblading in the past and now feel stuck with brows they’re unhappy with. Sometimes the pigment has turned grey or red; sometimes the shape never suited them to begin with, and in many cases, the skin has been overworked from too many touch-ups. They’re hoping I can fix it, and I try to help as many people as I can.

But the truth is, not everything can be corrected with a new technique. If the skin’s been damaged or the pigment is too dark and saturated, the best (and safest) option is often removal first. In those cases, I’ll gently refer them to a laser before we even think about a fresh start.

Is Microblading Still a Good Option in 2025?

It depends.

While Microblading is still offered at many studios, an increasing number of brow artists are shifting to techniques that do the same thing but are less invasive, more precise, and better for long-term skin health.

Think of it like this: microblading was the first iPhone, groundbreaking at the time. However, there is now a better version with more innovative features and fewer issues. It’s called Nano Brows.

What’s the Difference Between Microblading and Nano Brows?

Nano Brows do everything Microblading does, but better, and more gently.

Here is a chart that shows the differences.

Microblading vs. Nano Brows

Are Nano Brows Better Than Microblading?

In most cases, yes.

Nano Brows give you the same filled-in, fluffy look without cutting the skin. The pigment is placed using a machine and an ultra-fine needle, which allows for greater precision, smoother healing, and better retention over time.

If you’ve been told your skin isn’t a great fit for Microblading, oily, aging, or sensitive, nano brows are always the better route.

Do Nano Brows Look More Natural?

Yes! And they age better, too.

Because the strokes are finer and the pigment sits closer to the surface, Nano Brows fade evenly and softly. They don’t blur or turn grey the way Microblading sometimes can. The end result? Fluffy, real-looking brows that blend into your natural hairs.

Is Microblading Safe for Mature or Sensitive Skin?

This is where Nano Brows really shine.

Microblading can be too aggressive for aging, sensitive, or thinning skin. It can leave scars or inconsistent results. Nano Brows, on the other hand, are gentle enough to work with even the most delicate skin types, and they tend to retain colour more evenly.

At our Toronto studio, we see many clients in their 40s, 50s, and 60+ who want to look fresh, not overdone. Nano gives them that.

So… Should I Still Get Microblading?

I wouldn’t recommend it.  Nano Brows do the same job with fewer risks, a softer look, and longer-lasting results. It's the reason why many permanent makeup artists made the switch, and why so many of my clients now ask for nano by name.
